ALPHABET CHALLENGE - J is for JUST KIDDING

 

Hi friends, and welcome back to my newest ALPHABET CHALLENGE DT card!

The theme this go-around is J is for JUST KIDDING / Funny. 

You have two whole weeks to play along, and you can enter up to three times any handcrafted items featuring the current theme.

Year after year, I can never get enough of this penguin pair – I just love them so much!! And I love that he understands her struggle :o) I’m not much of a drinker but I do love a good limeade ice cream freeze so that’s what we’re having poolside today!

Special thanks to Sarah for sharing some of her de-stash treasures with me - could not have pulled this card together so cutely without you!

SOME DETAILS

 Penguins were colored with pencils, then fussy cut. They were stamped again on patterned papers and their clothing was fussy cut and applied because, honestly – who wants to look at naked penguin parts? :o)

 I used a stamp positioner to stamp the main quote in pink as well as black, so that it would be easier to read, and then I die cut it with an oversized quote bubble. I also cut a couple extra blanks from scrap card stock to give the bubble stability. Mr Penguin’s bubble was cut from a larger cover plate full of various sized bubbles. 

*TIP OF THE DAY*

When doing this style of card, if you cut your card base first, you can experiment to be sure your second image has enough room to hide under the fold of the top panel.

Snow Day Spinner Card

SUPPLIES:

Stamps - Crate Paper SNOW AND COCOA

Ink - Memento Tuxedo Black

Markers - Copic

Die Cut - Stampin' Up! Sizzix Big Shot Bigz L PERFECT PENNANTS

Patterned Paper - unknown

Other - Ranger Accents in white, Sakura Gelly Roll white gel pen

TECHNIQUE:

1.  Die cut 3 scalloped circles from white cs

2.  Stamp each circle with a different child and color with markers.  Use gray marker to color in open space and add white gel pen highlights.

3.  Affix patterned paper to white card front.  Adhere one circle with image, stamp sentiment in black and highlight with white dot accents.

4.  For best results on inside of card refer to spinner card videos on YouTube - Jennifer McGuire is a mechanical card genius! The main thing is to make sure your circle cut from the inside patterned paper will freely accomodate your spinning feature. The second most important is that the spinning circle won't hang outside the card when folded for mailing.

(TIPS:  Hold off on cutting the length off your patterned paper till you know how much you will need when it is folded.  You may need to reinforce the patterned paper section with light to medium weight cardstock.  Be sure to have the panel lying flat when you attempt gluing the thread on the inside fold top and bottom as it will need to dry flat and stretched straight.) 

5.  Stamp sentiment on inside of card as desired.

Thank You Cards

SUPPLIES:

Cardstock - Neenah Classic Crest Solar White 110lb

Stamps - Stampin' Up! PUN FUN & I {HEART} HEARTS

Markers - Copic, fine point black marker

Inks - Stampin' Up! various reds & pinks, Memento Tuxedo Black

Other - Gelly Roll white gel pen

TECHNIQUE:

1. Stamp image and sentiment in black ink on cardfront and color in with markers, highlighted by white gel pen.

2.  Use a blank slick surface to stamp image on again and then transfer to white cs scrap. Trim and color same as front image, filling in any fainter lines with black pen, and adhere to inside of card, covering up marker bleed from front image.

3. Stamp a row of hearts in various ink colors on scrap white cs, making sure edges touch. Fussy cut, keeping hearts all attached.Score at connection points and mount only back of each end heart to inside of card as shown. (Tip: Before cutting hearts out, score and fold accordian-style to make sure you will have the backs showing on top and bottom of stack where you will need to affix to the card base - you may need to add another heart. You can then tape/glue each end heart on the reverse and lay the stack on the inside of the card, fold the cover closed and they should line up nicely.)

Playing along with the LESS IS MORE Challenge #412, Less / Tiny and Few

This next card was a thank you for a beautiful table runner given to us at Christmas-time, made from coffee bean sacks.  As I was going to send the thank you out after the holiday season, I wanted to retain the same feeling, but without the dark greens and reds.  It's hard to see in the photo without expanding, but the stamped band on the card had light red and light green sponged onto the stamp image.

SUPPLIES:

Stamps - Stampin' Up! BEAUTIFUL BATIK, sentiment from See-D's AGING GRACEFULLY

Inks - Stampin' Up, brown is a Distress Oxide

Other - watercolors, Gelly Roll white gel pen, medical gauze, tissue paper

Paper - watercolor, Neenah white

TECHNIQUE:

1. Spread watercolor wash over watercolor paper. While still wet, lay gauze over it and allow to dry.  Remove gauze and tear edges. Mount to cardfront.

2. Ink border stamp by dabbing wadded up tissue paper on inkpads and then onto rubber.  (Tip: Use different scrap of tissue for each color, and try to work in random areas with just one color applied although some overlap is okay. Guard against muddying the colors as some inks are juicier than others.)

3. Stamp sentiment in brown over border and trim to size. Adhere to cardfront.

4. Using brown ink, stamp images on watercolored paper. Add white gel pen to images and some dots around them.

Happy New Year!

How's the resolutions list coming along? LOL I actually made a workable one this year which is odd for me - I usually don't even bother making one! But recently I've just felt like I needed to regroup a little bit. Best of luck with yours this year!

Here's a specialty fold card going out to my brother and his wife and family tomorrow to thank them for hosting Christmas this year. They did such an awesome job - their home is beautiful and comfy, they have lots of bathrooms for the morning rush LOL and the food was outstanding as always. It was a pleasure to be there, even counting the long drive to and from in less then ideal weather and road conditions. The older I get the more I appreciate all getting together and catching up. My brother's so talented in wood-working - he put such a fabulous 6-light votive stand he made in my "stocking" that I would have been happy to have just that! I'll try to remember to ask him if it's okay to post a photo of it here for you....

I got the layout idea for this card browsing what I think was a Papercrafts magazine at Joann's a few days ago. You may need to click on the photos below for more detail:

For this card I just cut a piece of dark kraft cs in half the long way, then rounded the corners with a Stampin' Up corner punch. I used the Scor-Pal (see yesterday's post) to score in half, then at the 1 1/2" line on one end.

I then cut a white panel to fit under this flap, and stamped it with flourishes by Stampin' Up! (Finest Flourishes set) in Versafine black and SU Cranberry Crisp from last year's In Colors. I adhered the white panel to the kraft card front, and then added punched and layered circles as shown with eyelets before adhering the kraft flap down to the cardfront. I tucked a little embroidery floss under one eyelet and wound it around as shown, tucking the end under a circle.

*tip*

If you don't have the color eyelets or brads you need for your project (I couldn't believe I didn't have any black!) just use a permanant ink to color them. Here I had silver eyelets and used a Slick Writer in black. You could also try alcohol inks, Sharpies, embossing ink and powder or nail polish.

I cut a red rectangle from textured cs and rounded the corners, then did the same with a white piece. I stamped thank you (SU Sincere Salutations set) in the black ink, and the swirl in the Cranberry. I adhered these as shown over the flap.

For the pull out tag panel, I cut a white panel narrow enough to clear the double-stick tape holding the kraft card together along the sides. I stamped a swirl on the bottom in black in, then punched a few coordinating circles for the tab. The red is a half circle glued down, and there are two kraft cs circles back to back with a looped ribbon and the brad prongs tucked between.

*tip*

When mailing a card like this where there are some embellishments that stick up a bit, either put a scrap piece of cs the same size as your card over them in the envelope, or apply clear packing tape to the outside of the envelope where they rest to avoid tearing while going thru the mail system.
